New Year Eve
They were Romans, who started to observe 1st January as the beginning of the new year. But, at first, they followed this special day in late March. But, as the emperors of Romans were changed, they brought several changes in the calendar. This happened because every one of them wanted to set the calendar according to their own way. But in the Middle Ages, the early Catholic Church disfavoured the New Year festivities. Because they used to think that it was against the Christian tradition. You must be surprised to know that, for about the past 400 years, 1st January has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations. Germany took up the new tradition in 1700, Britain in 1752 and Sweden in 1753.
Most of the new year festivities start on 31st December ( the last day of the Gregorian calendar ) and continue into the 1st January.
There are some common traditions regarding this day. Many new traditions have evolved until today. These traditions may include watching fireworks display, spending time with family and friends, making resolutions for the upcoming year, having parties, making and eating exceptional food. Food may vary from country to country.
